Markers of a Sustainable Kitchen Company | Earth Day 2025
25 Apr 2023
Remember in 2021 when businesses briefly stalled, dolphins infiltrated Venice waterways and we saw pollution damage slow? Regretfully, some companies haven’t looked at that moment as an example of what they should aim for to prepare for Earth Day 2025.
What about us at Sigma 3, however? Have we been doing our bit to harmonise with nature like Disney princesses singing with wildlife? Yes. The answer is yes.
Even Dave in the factory.
(Who says princesses can’t rap to Eminem?)
Despite our commitment to raising industry standards with eco-friendly kitchens, though, achieving 2030 Agenda targets will be a challenge. Yet, we’re so committed that we’re sharing how we’ve optimised as a green business to set an example and help you make more informed kitchen purchasing decisions.
Renewable Forest Materials
What’s our first tip for creating sustainable kitchen supplies? Quite simply, it’s to strip back the manufacturing process to first principles and figure out what has the biggest impact. For us, that’s:
- The brief
- Base materials
Luckily, our briefs already consider the planet a priority and have done for years. We know, you see, that placing the environment at the forefront is essential for making real change.
At Sigma 3, we source a huge portion of our board – the material that acts as a base for most of our products – from FSC® and PEFC certified forests. In all, 100% of our board comes from waste wood sources.
Using this approach, we’ve reduced pollution and energy consumption without affecting our quality standards. It’s a challenging but necessary step for any nature-conscious kitchen company.
Environmentally Friendly Processes
Once considered impractical, green manufacturing is at the centre of our process. After all, harnessing eco-friendly materials isn’t enough. Profound change also requires a sustainable construction process.
In recent years, we’ve updated our recycling practices and partner relationships to achieve a zero-to-landfill goal, in addition to powering our manufacturing facility and offices with renewable energy.
Energy Efficient Accessories
Lots of businesses advertise their energy-efficient manufacturing plants but forget to mention their products aren’t exactly good for the environment after they leave the building. That’s not us.
We are only comfortable promoting sustainable kitchen supplies that are as good as our cabinets. As a result, we only fit LED lights in our ranges that allow you to save energy at home. That’s wonderful for nature and your finances.
Sustainable Marketing Examples
In many ways, our sustainability push goes beyond production. Our marketing practices are just as green. Indeed, we now prioritise online marketing which saves a significant amount of paper.
If you need a print brochure, though, don’t worry. Having sourced paper from FSC® certified forests, and using vegetable-oil-based inks, our printing partner produces sustainable catalogues that anyone can recycle.
Thanks to these measures, according to the World Land Trust (WLT), we’ve balanced the equivalent of 17,891 kg of CO2 in print runs this year, contributing to the protection of 3,417 m2 of threatened forest.
